The Conoco Phillips Science Experience

The Science Experience is a fun three or four days of science activities for Year 9 and 10 students

Each program is designed to provide students who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of fascinating science activities under the guidance of scientists who love their work.

The program takes place in over thirty-seven universities and tertiary institutions, within many different laboratories and lecture theatres. Participants perform experiments in the laboratories, meet and hear senior lecturers in the lecture theatres, attend site visits and walk around and experience what it is like to be on the campus of a university or tertiary institution. More than 53,000 students have taken this rare opportunity, up to date.

The program also provides information about further studies in science, technology and engineering. It highlights the wide range of careers that allow students to pursue their interest and abilities in the sciences.  One aspect of the programs often commented on by participants is the opportunity to meet and share ideas with students from different schools. Each program includes a BBQ or other social activity.

Any Year 9 and 10 student is welcome to attend any one of the programs.

While this is not a Rotary program it is strongly supported by Rotary Clubs which promote the program, contact schools, sponsor many students to attend, participate actively in organising programs and in providing social activities.

Students can enrol online at

Applications are accepted immediately online at any time if a place is available.

If seeking Rotary sponsorship students are advised to send their application form to a local Rotary Club:

Local Rotary Clubs may consider sponsorship of the $110.00/$145.00 fee and submit the application on behalf of the student.

These fees do not cover any transport to and from the program, meals or any accommodation costs.

Western Australian Programs:

Edith Cowan University, Joondalup: Students could be netting macro invertebrates in the campus lake, exploring chemical reactions in the labs, investigating cloning and GMOs, making their own ‘Fake Fossil’, playing with polarizer’s and motion sensors, busting ‘sport drink’ myths, construct pipelines, and donning surgical scrubs.

The University of Western Australia, Perth: Interactive workshops are led by expert in their fields and cover an array of exciting areas including forensic science, sports science, physics, plant biotechnology, mathematics and statistics, chemistry, astronomy, psychology, the environmental sciences and engineering.

Curtin University of Technology, Perth: The Science Experience with Engineering includes hands-on science in such areas as food science, biotechnology, chemistry, physics, math’s and biology. Presentations from expert speakers in science and engineering, as well as site visits, engineering competitions and much more.
